A simple audit to find where the same operational task is being performed twice because ownership, systems, or reporting paths overlap.
Inventory repeated outputs
- List recurring reports, reconciliations, exports, approvals, and status updates.
- Identify who produces each output and for whom.
- Note cadence and destination.
Trace the source
- For each output, identify the source data and transformation steps.
- Mark outputs built from the same source for the same decision.
- Separate true control checks from accidental duplication.
Test necessity
- Ask what decision would fail if one copy disappeared.
- Keep independent checks only when they provide distinct evidence or control value.
- Flag manual copies that exist only because systems do not hand off cleanly.
Remove safely
- Choose one canonical owner/output before retiring a duplicate.
- Preserve required evidence and downstream dependencies.
- Recheck after one cycle to confirm nothing important was lost.
